Google is getting ready to unleash the new iteration of its open source browser to Beta development phase. Google Chrome 6.0 beta is already hit the code freeze milestone, and of course, the launch of the fully-fledged Beta Build is coming next. The search engine giant hasn’t revealed an exact date for Chrome 6.0 Beta, Google announces new development releases without much fanfare, after all, Google does offer a multitude of builds at a very fast pace.

Chrome 6.0 is now in the development stage in which no new features are being included, but the focus is placed instead on improving the forthcoming Beta build, and fixing as much of the drawback as possible. Testers that will try the Chrome 6.0 Beta out will be able to see a number of enhancements off the bat. Google has advanced its graphical user interface (UI), adding PDF integration into the browser after it swallowed Adobe Flash, and kicked up a notch the synchronization capabilities.

Moving onward, Google also announced that it will speed up the pace of the release final and stable version of Chrome process. Mozilla has rolled out updates for both its flagship browser Firefox and email client Thunderbird. Users are strongly recommend to download and install the updates as soon as possible since they address some of security and stability issues.

With this new update, Firefox hits version 3.6.7, patches 14 vulnerabilities, with more than half of those being labeled “critical”. According to the release notes, the patch also addresses a number of stability issues, but Mozilla did not provide further details. Mozilla also rolled out an update to the 3.5 .x version of Firefox to fix the similar problems. For security reasons users are highly advised to instal Firefox 3.6.7. An automated update prompt will be displayed to users who are using Firefox 3.6.X. If not, you can update your browser right now, by clicking Help -> Check for Updates.

While Mozilla’s mail client, Thunderbird, got a new update which brings several fixes to improve stability and security for the current 3.1 version, addressing a security vulnerability and stability issues alongside minor fixes. Similar to Firefox, Thunderbird users have to get an automated update notification. However they could also manually get the newest version by clicking Help -> Check for Updates.

An update released by antivirus giant McAfee to its corporate users Wednesday contained a buggy detection routine that made plentiful of computers to go into a restart loop. Universities, hospitals and several companies across the US reported issues once getting the update. The severe system instability problem stemmed from incorrect blocking of the critical svchost.exe file on Pcs running Windows XP SP3.

The first update was launched Wednesday, the 21st of April, at 2.00 PM Pacific time. It was pulled off only a couple hours later. The company then rolled out a corrected update, DAT 5959, hours once the bogus definition went out. But, the release has to be set out to affected systems manually in Safe Mode, a bad experience for IT staff in large companies with lots of Pcs.

“Mistakes happen. No excuses. The nearly 7,000 employees of McAfee are focused right now on two things, in this order. First, help our customers who have been affected by this issue get back to business as usual. And second, once that is done, make sure we put the processes in place so this never happens again,” commented Executive Vice President of Worldwide Technical Support and Customer Service for McAfee, Barry McPherson.

According to DownlaodSquad’s Lee Mathews, this nightmare is a crucial hit to McAfee’s image as a security software specialist. This mistake might very well determine IT staff to consider changing to another security software.

“Yes, McAfee has released a fix — but it’s one that has be applied hands-on at each affected computer. That’s going to create serious pains-in-the-ass for loads of admins and technicians around the globe — and pissed off admins are never averse to switching software when it decides to create a titanic load of extra work for them,” said Mathews.

No pleasant news circulating around the software driver for Nvidia graphics cards. A case has been reported that show the damage due to the error of graphics card driver 196.75 version.

Engadget reported some StarCraft II Beta players face frame rate reduction when using the latest drivers. The problem lies in the automatic settings of the graphics card fan is not functioning properly.

Not only decrease the frame rate, the more severe cases also have been reported. It is said that the impact from the hot chips, decreased performance and even damage the graphics card totally.

Nvidia also said to swiftly address this problem and remove the update from its site. Users who already use the 196.75 version is recommended for roll-back to the previous version (196.21).
